Under the title Landscape of Arts and Sciences, the urban environment of the Museo del Prado and the Parque del Retiro was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2021. Apart from the Museum's own buildings, the Prado Madrid collection includes in its original design some of the architecture that forms part of this landscape, such as the Real Jardín Botánico and Real Observatorio de Madrid, designed by Juan de Villanueva, the architect of the Prado's historic building. In addition to these are others such as the Royal Palace and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, so closely related, artistically and historically, to the Museum's collections.
