"The Three Mulattos of Esmeraldas" bag
100% cotton. 39 x 35.5 cm.
Andrés Sánchez Galque's The Three Mulattos of Esmeraldas (1599) depicts the Arobe family, descendants of slaves who led the indigenous resistance on the Ecuadorian coast, dressed in Spanish gowns, pre-Hispanic ornaments, Asian silks and African shark's-tooth necklaces. This sturdy cotton bag depicts a detail against a striking red background. Deposited at the Museo de América.
