This case reproduces a detail View of the Garden of the Villa Medici (ca. 1630) by Diego Velázquez. Besides their extremely high quality, two factors make these works singular among painting from their period. The first is the absence of a subject, and the second, it was extremely rare for a painter to set up his canvas and painting tools in front of the subject of his work and paint it on the spot, as Velázquez did in the present work.
