"Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria" folding pocket mirror
Fabric lined covers. 7.3 cm diameter.
When Mengs arrived in Florence in early June 1770, he was given accommodation in the Palazzo Pitti and Charles III immediately commissioned him to paint portraits of the entire princely family. The result of this commission is the portrait of Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria (1770), a detail of which is reproduced on the cover of this double mirror with lid. It shows the richness of the dress worn by the Archduchess in her childhood, adorned with pink bows and exquisite lace.
