More than 350 years after his death, Velázquez's name is not only associated with a collection of prodigious works and biographical vicissitudes, but also with a rich history of reinterpretations of his art and dialogues by writers, artists, philosophers and a wide variety of audiences.
In this volume, nineteen specialists examine episodes from his biography, the artistic and collecting context in which he developed his career, the main pictorial genres he cultivated, and the narrative, compositional and stylistic resources that explain why he was one of the most unique artists of his time and the enormous influence he has exerted since then.
The publication has its origins in the Velázquez lecture series organised by the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation, which took place in the Pinacoteca Auditorium between 6 October 2020 and 9 March 2021.
