The Prado has been defined, on numerous occasions, as a museum of painters rather than a museum of paintings. And one of the key artists in its collections is Pedro Pablo Rubens.
His importance for the Museo del Prado is due not only to the large number of works by his hand that the institution preserves, but also to the influence he had on the artists of the Spanish court, who were able to get to know the works by Rubens that hung in the royal palaces.
This book, written by eighteen specialists, not only looks at his artistic production, but also analyses the role played by the Flemish painter in the political and social sphere of Europe at the time.
The publication has its origins in the Francisco Calvo Serraller Pedro Pablo Rubens lecture series, organised by the Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado and held in the Auditorium of the Pinacoteca from 4 October 2022 to 8 March 2023.
