Women have had a multi-faceted and varied presence in the world of art over the centuries, as creators, promoters, and collectors, and also as subjects of the male gaze. For some years now, the Museo del Prado has been committed to revealing this diversity through exhibitions, lectures, conferences, study grants and thematic routes such as the one presented here. This is the second edition of The Female Perspective, following the exceptionally enthusiastic reception of the first edition, held in 2023, which has become a reference for other museums and collections. Its intention was—and remains here—that of celebrating the collecting activities of women whose contribution to the enrichment of the former Spanish royal collection (and hence the present-day museum) was decisive.
This itinerary focuses on the seventeenth century. It does so through three key figures: Elisabeth of Bourbon, Mariana of Austria, and Christina of Sweden. Thanks to them, the Museo del Prado houses key works by Dürer, Rubens, and Velázquez, as well as sculptures of the importance of The Muses.
