Around 1400, the European courts produced some of the most brilliant manifestations of medieval art. From that time on and throughout the 15th century, artists active throughout Europe displayed a marked taste for formal elegance and the extravagant fashion of the time. The result was fascinating creations that still surprise us today for their visual sophistication, the fruit of a particular combination of realistic and decorative elements. The plastic sublimation of the values of the late medieval aristocracy, and especially the chivalric codes, was the main objective of most of the works. In this volume, nineteen specialists bring us closer to an extraordinary aesthetic universe, which is largely the basis of the imaginary built around medieval art.
The publication has its origins in the series of conferences The Splendors of the Gothic. The art of the late Middle Ages, which was organised by the Friends of the Museo del Prado Foundation and took place in the Pinacoteca Auditorium between 3 October 2023 and 12 March 2024.
