Passions and emotions – such as love, joy, hatred and desire – have been present in the history of art since its inception. However, over the centuries they have shone with different intensities and nuances, always in keeping with the thinking and cultural circumstances of each moment. This book takes a historical look at the representation of passions in different artistic disciplines, such as painting, sculpture, architecture and music. With the help of the eighteen authors who contribute to this volume, we discover how, beyond religious and mythological iconography, beyond artistic theories and ideologies, the reflection of all these passions and drives that we experience fills art with true life.

The publication has its origins in the series of lectures Entre el amor y la muerte. Las pasiones en el arte, organised by the Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado, which took place in the Pinacoteca Auditorium between 1 October 2024 and 4 March 2025.
