Anton Raphael Mengs' mastery is distinguished by the grace he imprints on his works, that is, by that thing that is better felt than explained, and consists of a certain softness in the contours, ease in the movements, which show nothing forced; in choosing that precise movement that all the parts take when they are shown pleasantly; and finally in the naturalness and harmony of composition and colouring.
José Nicolás de Azara, patron and diplomat, was posted for many years to the Spanish embassy in Rome, where he met Mengs and became great friends with him. After the artist's death, he published his writings and extolled his pictorial legacy.
