This beautifully woven tea towel reproduces Goya's preparatory drawing for the aquatint Capricho 39: The Literary Donkey (1796-1797). It is one of the twenty-six pen drawings that make up the series Los Sueños ("Dreams"). The caption of this drawing confirms that the object of Goya's criticism was the false literati, characterised as asses, an allegory of ignorance.
