"Philippine Woman" pocket mirror
7.3 cm in diameter.
Years earlier, the men and women engaged in agricultural activities in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines had already been portrayed with a very specific realistic sense, but in the mid-1890s the depictions acquired, in addition to a greater ethnographic richness, a monumental appearance, as Lorenzo Rocha's Philippine Woman (1895) shows. A detail of this work is reproduced in this practical pocket mirror, which accurately depicts the racial and clothing characteristics that at the time were indicative of a culture different from that of the Spanish mainland.
