The four essays collected in this book propose a reflection on the art of the Middle Ages present in museums and churches, proposing a round trip between the Museo del Prado and some of the thousands of temples of that period that dot the Spanish and European landscape. With the aim of offering a contextual reading of the different elements that make up the so-called "altar arts", such as frontispieces, tabernacles and ciboria, special attention is paid to the altarpiece, the pinnacle of Hispanic medieval art, tracing its development in the 14th and 15th centuries and analysing its location inside churches. In addition to studying the original setting of the pieces, they are placed in relation to other European examples and are thus framed in a broader artistic landscape.

JUSTIN KROESEN (Hoogeveen, The Netherlands, 1975) is Professor of Cultural History at the University of Bergen (Norway) and scientific curator of the religious art collection at the Universitetsmuseet in Bergen. He holds a degree in Theology from the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), specialising in Christian Art, and obtained a PhD in Theology and Religious Sciences from the same university with a thesis on the medieval altarpiece in the Iberian Peninsula. Kroesen's scientific research focuses on the architecture, furnishings and use of churches, especially during the Middle Ages and the Reformation period. His research focuses mainly on Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, and is characterised by a comparative perspective.
