SPANISH MASTERPIECES FROM THE FRICK COLLECTION OF NEW YORK IN THE MUSEO DEL PRADO
Plain paper. A5 (14.5 x 21 cm). 100 sheets (200 pages).
Detail of the El Greco's work San Jerónimo (ca. 1590-1600), in which the character appears without attributes to identify this figure as a saint, the frontal gaze and rather unidealised features. The success of this innovative iconographic formula lies in the combination of a chromatically dramatic composition with equally striking gestural language: Jerome has paused from reading his book in order to focus on someone (the viewer) who has entered his space.
This is one of the paintings that can be seen at the Museo Nacional del Prado on the occasion of the exhibition "Spanish Masterpieces from The Frick Collection", a unique opportunity to admire it.
