"Landscape" pencil case

On the occasion of the exhibition On the Reverse, held at the Museo Nacional del Prado from 7 November 2023 to 3 March 2024, the magnificent work reproduced in this beautiful wooden pencil case is presented to the public: Landscape (ca. 1884), by Vicente Palmaroli, from the Museo de Jaén, where it is housed as a deposit of the Museo Nacional del Prado. This work is of great interest as it is the reverse of Sketch of a Seated Girl Reading. For many 19th-century artists it was common to take pictorial notes, especially landscape paintings, although in this case both sides have been treated as reverses, and inventory labels can be seen on both parts.
