"Weighted the cork in the Sierra de Cádiz" metallic pencil case
Aluminium. 21 x 6.5 x 2.7 cm. Includes 12 graphite pencils.
In his work Weighted the cork in the Sierra de Cádiz (1908) Francisco Hernández-Rubio portrays two teenagers who appear to have joined the adults in stripping the bark from the cork oaks, a delicate task carried out between July and September that required a great deal of manual labour. This photograph was taken at a time in history when many artists found agricultural and livestock work to be a source of inspiration, which they depicted with a naturalistic sense and sought to break away from the previous tradition of genre painting. The detail is reproduced in this sophisticated metal case containing 12 pencils with the Museo del Prado logo printed on them.
