The Eye of the Painter, by John Banville, is the third volume in the Writing the Prado collection, following The Spirit Level, by 2020 PEN/Faulkner Fiction Award winner Chloe Aridjis, and The Museum Guard, by Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee. The collection is organised by the Prado Museum with the sponsorship of the Loewe Foundation and in collaboration with Granta in Spanish.

John Banville was born in Wexford, Ireland, in 1945. After completing his education, he began working as a flight attendant, which allowed him to travel the world. However, he regretted not having studied at university. Back in Dublin, he began writing for various media outlets, which had always been his dream.

His career as a novelist took off with the publication of his first book, Long Lankin (1970). With The Book of Evidence, he was a finalist for the Booker Prize (1989), an award he would win in 2005 with the book The Sea. He has also been awarded the Frank Kafka Prize (2005) and the Austrian Prize for European Literature (2013). In 2014, he received the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature. He also writes crime novels under the pseudonym Benjamin Black.
