"Catalan fishermen" linen tea towel

In Catalan Fishermen (circa 1910-14) Juli González i Pellicer uses an everyday theme to portray two fishermen, among whom the female figure stands out. According to ethnographic studies of the time, they carried out land-based tasks such as making and repairing nets, cleaning fishing utensils and boats, small-scale sales and, as in the present work, unloading and transporting fish. González presents a typology of a woman surrounded by pastel-coloured chromatic ranges and resolved by emphatic volumes, which gives the character prominence over the man, who remains in the second plane by hiding his face.
