Educated artistically in Dresden and Rome under the tutelage of his father, court painter Ismael Mengs (1687–1764), Anton Raphael Mengs (1728–1779) was named after his father's admiration for Antonio Allegri da Correggio (c. 1489–1534) and Raffaello (Raphael) Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520). He began his career as a painter at the Electoral Court of Saxony and later at the Papal Court in Rome, under the protection of various figures in the papal curia, including Cardinal Alessandro Albani, who commissioned him to paint the famous mural of Parnassus. In 1761, he entered the service of Charles III, spending the rest of his life under the patronage of the King of Spain and the Indies.
This exhibition catalogue examines his artistic and theoretical activity throughout the different stages of his life, through the best examples of his work brought together in the exhibition. The rich collection of Mengs' works in Spain, divided between the Prado Museum and the Royal Collections of National Heritage, has been joined by outstanding paintings from Europe and America. This exceptional combination is enriched in Madrid by the nearby presence of his mural paintings in the Royal Palace.
The book represents a significant advance in our knowledge of the painter and updates research on his life and work, with contributions from specialists who analyse his activity in Dresden, Rome and Spain, his artistic thinking, his devotion to classical antiquity and, finally, with an innovative study of his technique, both in easel painting and mural painting.
